HI Bill. Here are some memories for the memory book. Thanks so much for doing
this.

Gabi Remz said:
" Dick was a lot like the guy who painted the Mona Lisa.  He had a lot of
different jobs and was good at many things."

For all of us at 54 Ballard Street, Dick was a fixture in the neighborhood.  He
was outside so much, in good and bad weather and always had a friendly greeting
or quip for us.  We sometimes were on the same schedule, walking to the minyan.
Especially when our kids were younger, I would say to Dick -- it's ok, you can
go ahead to the minyan. But he would choose to walk slowly with us anyway,
watching the children walk on the walls on Sumner Street and one time, taking a
very fussy Gabi on his shoulders and then giving him a very long ride.

A couple of years ago, some very strange looking thing was growing under a shrub
in our front yard.  We went to straight to Dick who promptly pulled out his
mushroom book and quickly identified this as a "canine phallus" mushroom (or
something like that.)  In other words, it was a dog penis mushroom which is
really what it looked like.  Dick found them pretty fascinating.

Dick was able to pull community together to do quite complicated things and he
seem to do this without appearing rattled.  I'm thinking of both the honey
harvest and the lulav assembly where the Israel house, kitchen and/or porch
would be overrun with adults and children doing manual labor.  With the lulav
palm folding task, he would teach a few people to do it who would then, in turn,
teach others.  This is a real metaphor for Dick's ablilty to spark an interest
and excitement in people who then pass it on to others.

We were honored to be Dick's friends and neighbors and we will treasure our
memories with him.
